O mercado de arte teve um início mediano durante o primeiro mês do novo ano. Quase todos os principais lotes do leilão em janeiro foram vendidos na venda da Sotheby’s Old Master, que rendeu mais de US$ 90 milhões. A obra mais cara – obra de Sandro Botticelli do final do século 15 ou início do século 16 que retrata um Cristo ressuscitado – arrecadou US $ 39,3 milhões, ficando um pouco abaixo de sua estimativa superior de US$ 40 milhões (sem taxas). O trabalho, que só foi reatribuído a Botticelli em 2009, depois de muitos acreditarem que foi feito por seus assistentes, atraiu apenas três licitantes sérios. O preço final de US$ 45,4 milhões é agora o segundo mais alto para o artista.
Outros lotes notáveis que entraram em nossa lista incluem a pintura Woman with Pink Ribbons, de Ammi Phillips, que bastante disputada e arrematada na Christie’s por impressionantes US$ 3,9 milhões, mais do que triplicando a estimativa de pré-venda (de US$ 800.000 a US$ 1,2 milhão) e superando facilmente o recorde anterior da artista, de US$ 1,7 milhão. Outro resultado impressionante veio da Heritage Auctions em Dallas, onde a venda de um desenho do Homem-Aranha de 1984 por US$ 3,4 milhões estabeleceu um novo recorde para o segmento de quadrinhos, que anteriormente era de US$ 657.250.
