Ao todo, 83 artistas participam da “Interesting Times”, edição com curadoria de Ralph Rugoff

A exposição central deste ano, “May You Live in Interesting Times”, com curadoria de Ralph Rugoff, diretor da Hayward Gallery em Londres, inclui 83 artistas – alguns trabalhando em pares ou coletivos. O mais jovem deles é o artista lituano Augustas Serapinas, nascido em 1990, enquanto o mais velho é o norte-americano residente em Berlim, Jimmie Durham, nascido em 1940.

Rugoff, o primeiro curador do Reino Unido a dirigir a bienal, selecionou 16 norte-americanos para a mostra (a nacionalidade mais representada); da China, serão seis artistas; Índia, Japão, Coréia do Sul, Alemanha e Reino Unido têm três artistas cada.

O título da mostra foi retirado de um discurso proferido no final da década de 1930 pelo parlamentar britânico Austen Chamberlain, que falava de uma antiga maldição chinesa: “Que você viva em tempos interessantes.” Com as tensões que levaram à Segunda Guerra Mundial de plano de fundo, “não há dúvida de que a maldição caiu sobre nós”, disse Chamberlain. “Passamos de uma crise para outra. Sofremos distúrbios e choques, um depois do outro”.

“Este resumo soa estranhamente familiar hoje, com o ciclo de notícias girando de crise em crise”, disse Rugoff em sua declaração curatorial. E ainda, apropriadamente, considerando a era atual das chamadas fake news, “acontece que nunca houve a tal ‘antiga maldição chinesa’, apesar do fato de que os políticos ocidentais fizeram referência a ela em seus discursos por mais de cem anos”.

A exposição não será organizada em resposta a qualquer tema abrangente. Em vez disso, Rugoff espera que “a arte possa ser uma espécie de guia de como viver e pensar em “tempos interessantes”.

Sob o título “May You Live in Interesting Times”, a Bienal de Veneza acontece entre 11 de maio e 24 de novembro de 2019.
